Farm-Fresh Ice Cream

I couldn't resist a taste of the unusual flavors of Carmela Ice Cream at last week's South Pasadena farmers' market. At $3 for a small, it's not a bargain, but it's worth it with distinctive, garden-inspired flavors you can't find anywhere else. Next time I'll arrive earlier before the Salted Caramel, Strawberry Buttermilk, or Lemon Verbena Vanilla Bean are sold out. I tried the Lavender Honey—the bright tang of lavender was a nice counterpoint to the mellow honey, though by the end of the serving my taste buds were a little fatigued from the sharp herb.

The paper cup reminded me of those single-serve ice cream cups of my youth; in fact, it's not paper at all but a biodegradable cup made from sugarcane. In another nod to sustainability, Carmela uses organic ingredients from Silver Lake Farms to make small batches of its ice creams, and flavors vary based on the season and what's available.

Carmela also makes sorbets in decadent flavors like Lime Mint, Heirloom Tomato, and Blueberry Thyme. Check them out today at South Pasadena or at the farmers' markets in La Cañada Flintridge on Saturday, Hollywood on Sunday, or Culver City on Tuesday.

I most certainly will try them in Culver City... I am just familiarizing myself with the farmers' markets in LA, though I recognize some vendors from my "old" Laguna Beach haunt. Strawberry Buttermilk sounds heavenly!
